The new Russian co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group, Igor Popov, who replaced Yuri Merzlyakov, arrived in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic from Yerevan today. According to Armenian media, Popov is meeting the leader of the Karabakh Armenians, Bako Sahakyan. Popov visited Ilkham Aliyev in Baku, then Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan in Yerevan, before visiting Nagorno-Karabakh, TURAN reports.
The high-speed train "Armenia" will be launched on May 30th on the route between Yerevan and Barumi, reports Armenia Today, citing the director of the South Caucasus Railroads, Shevket Shaidullin. He also announced changes in suburban train schedules, with trains running up to four times a on the Yerevan-Armavir and Yerevan-Ararat routes.
The Kazakh parliament has ratified an agreement with Armenia on promotion and joint protection of investments. "The agreement states that both sides are bound to provide fair and equitable currency of investments and investment returns as well as economic protection", said vice-minister for industry and technologies Narmuhambet Abdibekov. The agreement was signed on November 2006. It is aimed at further developing economic cooperation between the countries. Meanwhile, both sides have the right to exclude and limit the sphere of action of the agreement.
A mountain landslide has damaged the North-South gas pipeline, Trend reports, citing head of Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation Zurab Janjgava.Repair works will take 2-3 days. Gas supply to Georgia has not been effected, by using an Azerbaijani pipeline, Janjgava said.Three working teams are currently repairing the pipeline. Armenia still has enough gas stored to supply the country for 10 days.
Chinese General Secretary Hu Jintao invited Armenian President SerzhSargsyan to visit China on Thursday, to take part in the worldexhibition EXPO-2010 in Shanghai 1 May - 31 October, News Armeniareports.The president will be assisted by Armenian Foreign Minister EdwardNalbandian, Minister of Economy Nerses Yeritsyan and Minister ofEnergy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan. There will be no redundancy at the Neirit factory and workers will continue to receive wages, Armenian Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan stated to parliament, Panorama reports. Armenia is going to join Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in a Customs Union, even though it has no common borders with them, the RBK-Daily newspaper reports. Armenia is going to create a special economic zone, with transit and customs procedures similar to those in Kaliningrad region of Russia, the paper said. The issues of Armenia's entry into the Customs Union were discussed at the Yerevan meeting of the Armenian Premier Tigran Sargsyan and Russian First Deputy Premier Igor Shuvalov.
