Historical experience and future perspectives" opened today at the University of Tehran.The seminar was organized by the Analysis Center for the Caucasus and Central Asia of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Among other issues, the participants plan to discuss the problem of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.

The Armenian national statistics service published the macroeconomic indicators for the first half of 2010. The chairman of the parliamentary commission for finances and credit affairs, Gagik Minasyan, commented on the indicators, Panorama reports. He said that the income of the state budget increased by 22.5% compared with the same period in 2009, and by 6% compared with 2008.Industrial growth grew by 12.3%, construction by approximately 4% and services by approximately 6%. The production of cognac in Armenia in January-June of 2010 constituted over 4 million liters, which is 45.9% more than the first six months of 2009, Gazeta.ru reports.Russia and Ukraine are the main markets for Armenian cognac. In 2009, due to the economic crisis, production of Armenian cognac decreased by 38.4%, constituting just under 10 million litres.

The US Appropriation Committee enacted a bill for foreign aid for 2011, according to which US aid to Armenia will amount to $40 million, and aid to Nagorno-Karabakh will amount to $10 million, reports RIA Novosti. The Armenian Assembly of America pointed out that the sum has been reduced by $1 million compared to the previous year. The Assembly is intends to continue working with the US Senate and the House of Representatives to offer more aid for Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

Russia and Armenia will sign a protocol introducing changes to the agreement on a Russian military base on the territory of Armenia. According to the document, the Russian military base in Armenia will protect the interests of Russia in providing security in the republic, together with Armenia.

Armenia has the second highest growth in prices for consumer goods in January-June 2010 among former Soviet republics. The prices have risen by 4.5% since last year in Armenia, news.am reports. An Armenian soldier shot dead five of his colleagues before turning his weapon on himself, Armenian human rights activist Artur Sakunts said, Interfax reports.The serviceman, whose surname was reported as Ayvazyan, was from Yerevan. He had earlier been deported from the USA. Sakunts said Ayvazyan opened fire after two officers began beating him after discovering him sleeping on duty. The incident took place in Karabakh. There has been no official statement from the Armenian Defense Ministry.

The government of Armenia approved on Thursday the conclusion of the commission of European communities on a financial agreement in the sphere of nuclear energy under which the EU will provide 11 million euros, News Armenia reports. The first deputy minister of the economy of Armenia, Karine Minasyan, said that the agreement will be realized in three spheres: assistance in improving nuclear security, nuclear waste security support and increasing the potential in this sphere.
