"School of Modern Drama" opens its Berlin branch
Russian drama theater opens its branch abroad for the first time in history. Starting from 2018/2019 season, the "School of Modern Drama" will regularly perfrom plays from its repertoire on the stage of the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin. In addition, joint performances with participation of Russian and German artists are also planned. It's believed that this will contribute to promotion of traditions of Russian theater in Europe, as well as attract German public - both Russian-speaking diaspora and German-speaking audience - to modern Russian theater art.
As Artistic Director of this theater, People's Artist of Russia, Iosif Rayhelgauz, said, theater will celebrate its 30 anniversary this year, and it has been touring abroad all these years: “In recent years have we performed in Vienna, Geneva, and Paris. We have close relations with Berlin. There's a small theater in which Russian German artists peform.
In addition, we regulardy hold tours there, I perform there. When I spoke to Pavel Aleksandrovich Izvolsky, who came to this Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin, I proposed to open a branch there. He immediately agreed. My friend Mikhail Shvydkoy, supported this idea. Then we gained support of the Department of Culture and Rossotrudnichestvo."
According to him, “Berlin branch will be opened on December 1, tickets are already on sale. New plays will be shown there every month. Pavel Izvolsky insisted that we must attract not only Russian-speaking audience, but also Germans. This is absolutely correct approach. Today, when Russia is isolated, cultural and human ties are among the things we're obliged to preserve no matter what."
