Azerbaijan will use customs motors boat purchased in Estonia to fight smuggling, APA reports, citing the head of the State Customs Committee Aydyn Aliyev. He said that the boats will have all the necessary equipment for the Caspian conditions. Aliyev also said that some border points are under reconstruction. Control posts were opened in Bilyasuvar, Balakyan and Samur. The Synyg Kerpyu and Astara control posts, which were recently supplied with advanced equipment, are ready for opening.

Azerbaijani strategic currency reserves have reached $26.5 billion, the Finances Minister Samir Sharifov said at discussions of the state budget for 2011 at the parliament. He said that the strategic reserves rose by 29.9%, or $6.1 billion, compared with early 2010. Azerbaijani strategic currency reserves are formed by the Central Bank, assets of the State Oil Fund and state deposits.Currency reserves of the Central Bank were reported to be equal to $6.057 billion in the late 3rd quarter, increasing by $895.9 million, or 19%.

Authorities in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, plans to construct the second exit of the ‘Academy Science’ subway station, APA reports. The issue is reflected in the transport development priorities document for 2011-2014. The senior engineer of Baku subway Elbrus Muradov said that the new exit will open at Baku State University and Agayev Street. Muradov said that the construction work will continue for approximately 2 years.

A Kazakh delegation has participated in the autumn session of OSCE PA in Palermo, where they discussed inter-parliamentary cooperation with the Chairman of the Parliament Assembly Petros Efthymiou, Kazinform reports. One of the main topics were transnational organized crime and corruption. Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi has arrived in Azerbaijan, APA reports. At the international airport of Heydar Aliyev, Vahidi said that he plans discussions of peace and stability in the region. This includes the Caspian region as well. The minister noted that Iran will provide any help to Azerbaijan and other countries of the region. Vahidi said that they plan to improve cooperation and sign documents.

The output of Azerbaijani oil via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline grew by 2.5% in the period January-September 2010 compared to 27.964 million tons last year, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan's (SOCAR) official press-service reports.The pipeline was opened operation on the 1st of October 2006 and 134.501 million tons of crude oil have since been exported from Azerbaijan's Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli field through it. The pipeline's output is 1.2 million bpd.

EBRD preliminary strategy for Azerbaijan publicised

Azerbaijan has successfully attracted major investments in the oil and gas sector by creating favorable conditions and operations for both local and foreign investors, and the government needs to recreate this success to attract investment in the non-oil sectors of the economy, states the preliminary version of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development's 2011-2013 strategy for Azerbaijan. "Closer integration into the global economy will allow Azerbaijan to improve productivity and competitiveness. Joining the WTO will support economic diversification through the establishment of a stable and predictable framework for importers and exporters and discourage protectionist reactions, reflecting a desire to deepen trade in goods and services outside the oil sector," the strategy reads.

Caspian summit to be held in December

Baku will host a presidential summit involving five Caspian countries (Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan) in December. Ramin Mekhmanparast said the sides will discuss the distribution of the Caspian Sea bed and determine the sea's status.

The construction of Azerbaijani mosques is mainly financed by Kuwaitand Turkey, Trend reports, citing a statement by the head of the statecommittee for religious structures Gigayat Orudzhev.Kuwait has built 73 mosques in Azerbaijan, Turkey - 21, Saudi Arabia -1, he said.Orudzhev said that Azerbaijan built many mosques in the 1990s, butsome of them were built illegally. No legal mosques have beendemolished, he said. The authorities will continue taking down illegalmosques, he added.
