2nd day of XV Summer European Youth Olympic Festival kicks off in Baku
The second day of the XV Summer European Youth Olympic Festival started in Baku today.
Swimmers, athletes, and wrestlers will be competing for 10 sets of medals on the second day of the competition, and games will be held between the tennis, basketball, volleyball and handball teams.
Azerbaijani wrestlers claimed four medals, including two gold, one silver and one bronze on the first day of the competitions. Azerbaijan’s Greco-Roman wrestler Farid Sadigli (45kg) has bagged the first gold medal thanks to a victory over the representative of Turkey Umut Coban. Another Azerbaijani freestyle wrestler Murad Hagverdiyev (45kg) has added a second gold to the nation`s medal haul after defeating Georgian rival Nikolozi Santeladze 11-4. Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestler Nihad Mammadli (55kg) has won a bronze medal thanks to a victory over the representative of Turkey Ates Bekir 9-1. Azerbaijani freestyle wrestler Abulfaz Nasirov (55kg) has won silver to seal his country’s fourth medal, when he lost 5-10 to Italian Simone Vincenzo Piroddu.
Four Russians claimed bronze medals: Eldar Asakaev (up to 45 kg) and Magomed-Emi Eltemirov (up to 55 kg), as well as Greco-Roman style wrestlers Maxim Gurov (up to 45 kg) and Danil Grigoriev (up to 55 kg).
The festival will be attended by more than 3,500 athletes from 48 European countries. Athletes will compete in ten kinds of sports - gymnastics, athletics, basketball, cycling, handball, judo, swimming, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. In total, athletes will compete for 135 sets of medals.
