Ahmet Onder: Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku extremely important for Turkish gymnasts

The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku are extremely important for Turkish athletes, the gymnast of the Turkish national team Ahmet Onder, who won the bronze medal in the floor exercises finals, said in an interview with the correspondent Vestnik Kavkaza.

"These competitions are very important for us, and we are trying to do our best to achieve the greatest results. We advanced to other individual finals and we want to compete for medals to glorify our country - that's why the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku are so important for us and for Turkey as a whole," he explained.

According to the gymnast, he received the "bronze" deservedly. "I felt that today is my day, but I fell down. Then I thought it's done, but it was necessary to finish my performance, so I did. When I heard that I was third, I was very happy with this medal. I am also happy that Murad Agharzayev won the gold medal because he deserved it. Sometimes it happens in gymnastics that you want to be the first, but you make mistakes, so a bronze medal is also a good thing," Ahmet Onder stressed.

The athlete said that artistic gymnastics is currently gaining popularity. "I cannot say that it is the most popular sport, but thanks to us winning medals, gymnastics is becoming more popular in Turkey. We are very happy and grateful to our government for its support," the Turkish gymnast said.

Ahmet Onder said that his parents were also engaged in gymnastics. "Therefore, since I was a very active child, they decided to bring me to the coach, and he said that I have talent. I have been training regularly since I was 8 years old, now we constantly live in a training camp in Izmir. Izmir is the best place for gymnasts in the country," he noted, adding that he hopes to win the gold medal in China.

The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games are held in Baku from May 8 to 22. Athletes will compete at 16 sports facilities in 20 types of sports - 17 Olympic and three non-Olympic ones. Competitions in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics were included in the program of Islamic Solidarity Games for the first time at the initiative of the First Vice President of Azerbaijan, President of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, Mehriban Aliyeva.
