Baku: how to defeat fascism
The International conference titled "The unity of peoples as a key factor in victory over fascism and the maintenance of peace' is being held in Baku. It was organized by the Azerbaijani representation of the International Union 'Heirs of the Victory', the Council of Veterans of War, Labor and Armed Forces of Azerbaijan Republic,as well as the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Representatives of state structures and public organizations, members of the Milli Mejlis, veterans from Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Latvia, Denmark, Bulgaria, as well as the representative of the Executive Committee of the CIS are taking part in the event.
The conference participants consider the historical contribution of peoples to the struggle against fascism in the Second World War, as well as ways to combat neo-fascism and maintenan peace.
Deputy Chief of the Public Policy Department of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan, Arastun Mehdiyev, recalled that two years ago a resolution combating glorification of Nazism and neo-Nazism was adopted at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly at the initiative of Russia. It was supported by 126 states. So, it is puzzling that Armenia, on whose territory the Nazi ideology is being spread at the state level, was among these countries.
"There is a process of heroization of war criminals in Armenia. A monument to the Nazi regime's accomplice Garegin Nzhdeh, who killed thousands of innocent people, has been erected there. The President of this country took part in its opening ceremony. There is a film and a book about Nzhdeh, as well as coins. In a word, the creator of the Armenian SS legion became a national hero," Arastun Mehdiyev said.
"Unfortunately, such indifference led to the fact that today the heirs of the Armenian fascism, imposed war on us, reviving the Nazi ideology. Nagorno-Karabakh and the seven surrounding regions have been under occupation for more than twenty-five years, more than a million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs as a result of ethnic cleansing," he said.
Arastun Mehdiyev added that the idea of national superiority and Armenia's aggressive policy threaten the security of not just entire region, but also complicate the fight against extremism and nationalism throughout the world.
According to him, it is significant that the conference is being held in Baku, which supplied the front with gasoline. "More than 700,000 of our compatriots, on a par with representatives of other republics of the Soviet Union, bravely fought in Great Patriotic War. About half of them did not return home. Back then, the total population of Azerbaijan was only 3.4 million people, that is, almost every fifth representative of our republic fought in the war," Arastun Mehdiyev stressed.
