EU ready to discuss customs union with UK
The European Union is ready to "discuss" a customs union with the U.K. if MPs settle on it as a compromise option, the lead candidate in French President Emmanuel Macron's party list for the European election, Nathalie Loiseau, said.
"If they vote for it, we will discuss it," the Politico cited her as saying.
A customs union means the U.K. and EU would keep a common trade policy and external tariffs. It would make the problem of avoiding infrastructure on the Northern Ireland border much easier to solve.
"A customs union would require the U.K. to adopt a common trade policy with the EU and apply its external tariffs," Loiseau stressed.
