Erdogan: appeals on election results is requirement of democracy

Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his ruling party would continue to contest irregularities in last month's local elections "to the last", adding that the country’s top election body would have the final say on the matter.

"When the Supreme Election Council makes the final decision, the issue [over the elections] will be finished for us," the Turkish leader told an international business conference held by the Confederation of Public Servants Trade Unions in Ankara.

"Through our history, every kind of political party has resorted to such methods [of appealing]," Anadolu Agency cited him as saying,

Erdogan added that such appeals were a "requirement of democracy".

After 17 days of objections and recounts, the opposition Republican People's Party new mayor Ekrem Imamoglu took office yesterday, despite a pending request by the AKP to annul and repeat mayoral elections in Istanbul.
