German Foreign Ministry hopes Turkey to refrain from Nazi parallels

Berlin expects that Turkey will no longer compare Germany with Nazi Germany, the spokesman of the German Foreign Ministry Sebastian Fischer said.

"We hope that Turkey heard clear messages not to use comparisons with the era of Nazism," RIA Novosti cited him as saying.

The relations between the two countries escalated after the arrest of the Turkish-German journalist of the Die Welt newspaper, Deniz Yucel, in Istanbul. German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Turkey to release the journalist.

The German town of Gaggenau withdrew permission for a meeting where Turkish minister Bekir Bozdag had been due to speak. Bozdag canceled a meeting with his German counterpart and flew back to Turkey.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Germany of "Nazi practices" on Sunday.
