Grigory Karasin: further meetings of Azerbaijani an Armenian leaders should be held

Meetings of Azerbaijani an Armenian representatives on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement should be well prepared to be effective and substantive, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said, welcoming the meetings of Azerbaijani an Armenian leaders and expressing hope that further meetings will be held, "OSCE Minsk-Group co-chairs are working in that direction."

Speaking in Yerevan, Karasin stressed that new meetings are ahead, both of the level of heads of state and foreign ministers.

"These meetings should be well prepared to be effective," Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister noted.

He also stressed that it is important to achieve that the international situation around the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is predictable and calm. "A relative calmness and predictability of the situation became characteristic recently. We must continue, the international community has a consensus in this sense," he pointed out.

According to him, the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs agree that force-based scenarios in the Karabakh settlement should be excluded. Negotiations should be held in a respectful manner, the Russian diplomat stressed.

Speaking about whether to expect the settlement of the Karabakh conflict this year, Karasin noted that it is a very difficult question. "Everyone would like to see the progress in the resolution of this matter to be achieved as soon as possible, but one has to be realistic and rely on common sense and negotiations, which primarily concern the leadership of Armenia and Azerbaijan and are held with the support of the international community, first of all the three co-chairs," the deputy foreign minister of Russia noted.
