Iraq ferry sinking: at least 96 killed
The death toll in the sinking of a ferry in the Tigris River in Iraq has reached 96, according to the Nineveh Interior Ministry.
Of the nearly 150 people who were on board, about 8 are still missing. Search operations are ongoing.
The ferry was transporting people from a bank of the river to a small tourist island called Umm al-Rabeein.
The director of Nineveh Water Resources said the boat capsized halfway because of high water levels in the river.
Civil Defense General Manager Brigadier Malik Bohanm in turn, said that the ferry was loaded with over twice the permitted capacity, Al Iraqiya reported.
