Lavrov and Tillerson discuss hold meeting in New York

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson discussed cooperation on the Syrian crisis and the settlement of the situation in Ukraine.

The meeting between Lavrov and Tillerson took place at the office of Russia’s mission to the United Nations in New York lasted less than an hour.

"The parties discussed cooperation on the Syrian crisis and other aspects of the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as the status of implementation of the Minsk agreements," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The chairman of Russia’s Federation Council International Affairs Committee, Konstantin Kosachev, noted that the latest meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson could be used for coordinating positions ahead of the UN General Assembly

"I see a positive signal in today’s meeting," TASS cited Kosachev as saying.

"No doubt, the two countries, which are permanent UN Security Council’s members, should coordinate their steps ahead of the upcoming General Assembly," the senator said.

"This is a good sign," he added.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have reiterated their commitment to eliminating conflict situations during the military operation in Syria, as well as to reducing the level of violence in the Arab Republic, the US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement.

"The two recommitted to deconflicting military operations in Syria, reducing the violence, and creating the conditions for the Geneva process to move forward, pursuant to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254," the document says.
