Russia attaches great importance to preserving and expanding ties with compatriots abroad, official spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said during a weekly briefing.

“There's a huge number of compatriots who, due to various circumstances, live abroad and identify themselves with Russia. They don't want to lose existing ties, they want to be involved in everything that happens in Russia in terms of development and preservation of culture,” she said.

According to Maria Zakharova, there are a lot of associations, foundations, NGOs that help to maintain bilateral cultural ties. "Sometimes compatriots work with them, sometimes these people have no apparent connection to Russia or inhabitants of our country, but they feel like they need to help us to develop these cultural relations," diplomat noted.

"Recently Russian delegation headed by Sergey Lavrov visited Spain. Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry awarded resident of Madrid, who spent many years donating paintings and supporting Soviet and Russian artists. She collected and demonstrated this collection, and then she returned part of her works to Russia. She believed and still believes that Russia is a part of her life," Zakharova said.

In conclusion, Maria Zakharova drew attention to the fact that culture, educational projects, science and sport allow us to find and build bridges between peoples.
