Mehriban Aliyeva: 4th Islamic Solidarity Games will be another victory for Azerbaijan

Yesterday President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev chaired the first meeting of the Organizing Committee of the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games to be held in Baku in 2017.

The chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Azerbaijan’s First Lady, Mehriban Aliyeva, made a speech at the event.

She said that the Organizing Committee will make every effort to prepare the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games at the highest level, and it will try to justify the confidence of the Azerbaijani people.

Mehriban Aliyeva noted that the events held so far have demonstrated the power and organizing ability of Azerbaijan, stressing that the Islamic Solidarity Games will be written into the history of independent Azerbaijan as its next victory.

According to the First Lady, the experience gained during the organization of the First European Games by the republic will be fully taken into account during these competitions. The Games are scheduled to be held in May 2017.

"It is expected that representatives of 57 Islamic countries will be involved in these games. It is planned to hold competitions in 20 sports (athletics, gymnastics, wrestling, boxing, judo, taekwondo, weightlifting, tennis, table tennis, shooting, swimming, basketball, handball, volleyball, football, karate, etc.). It is envisaged that the competition will be attended by more than 5000 athletes," she said about the program of upcoming events.

"There is no need to build a new sports facility," Mrs. Aliyeva noted.
