Merkel: EU decides to extend sanctions against Russia

The sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis will be extended for an additional six months, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said following the EU summit.

Merkel explained that the decision was made due to the slowly progressing Minsk process.

The EU decision to extend restrictive measures against Russia for an additional six months was not an issue of intense debate at the Thursday EU leaders’ summit, President of the European Council Donald Tusk said at a press conference after the summit.

"It was clear that we would prolong the sanctions for six months and some of our colleagues would prefer maybe 12 months, but in fact it wasn’t a discussion," Sputnik cited Tusk as saying.
