Mikhail Malkin: performing in Baku is big responsibility

Performing at the European Championship at home is a big responsibility, Azerbaijani gymnast Mikhail Malkin said, speaking with Vestnik Kavkaza after performing in the tumbling qualification on the sidelines of the European Championships in Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-Trampoline.

"In general, I liked my performance in the qualification. I wasn't that worried, I walked out confidently and performed, now I will prepare for the final. Yes, I ranked fourth, but a year ago I was ranked fourth after qualification at the World Cup in Baku, but was second in the end. Now I will try to be ranked first in the finals," Mikhail Malkin stressed.

The gymnast named athletes from Russia, Denmark and Great Britain as his main competitors. "Since this is the European Championship, the competition is much higher here than at other competitions," he noted.

"Of course, it's very difficult to perform at home. It's a big responsibility, everyone wants me to perform well, and I do not want to fail. In other countries, when you know no one there, it's easy to perform. But here I am responsible to the whole audience. But at the same time, you can feel the support of fans, especially friends, even my friend from Russia came here," Mikhail Malkin said.

The 26th European Championships in Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-Trampoline has opened in Baku today. More than 400 gymnasts from 25 countries are expected to join the Championships. In the first two days of the competitions, qualifications for all types of events both among junior and senior gymnasts as well as finals among teams will be held, on the last day, medalists will be known in all four types of the gymnastics events.
