Russian senator: sports officials should be punished for that failure
The decision to ban Russia made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is in line with the Western policy aimed at containing Moscow, Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Committee for Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev said.
"Without a doubt, it is part of the West’s policy to contain Russia," Kosachev wrote on Facebook. "They bought some traitors, choose some samples to retest and created a media hype. The IOC simply could not make any other decision, it was just forced to act this way," TASS cited him as saying.
The senator added that Russian sports officials should be held personally accountable for that failure. "We may be mad with the West and we would have a point. But I am confident that our sports officials should be held personally accountable as they clearly missed the start of this campaign and did not manage to take effective steps at its finish," Kosachev stressed.
On Tuesday, the IOC announced its decision to suspend the Russian Olympic Committee, banning the national team from participating in the 2018 Olympic Games in South Korea’s Pyeongchang. The IOC accused Russia of systematic violations of anti-doping rules, particularly during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. At the same time, the IOC intends to respect the rights of clean athletes, allowing them to participate in the upcoming games as "Olympic Athletes of Russia."
