Sergei Zheleznyak: Russia-Azerbaijan friendship makes much more sense than any attempts to divide us
For Russia it is important to strengthen its relations with Azerbaijan, the Deputy Secretary of the General Council of the United Russia party, member of the State Duma Committee for International Affairs Sergei Zheleznyak said, speaking with the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza on the sidelines of the presentation of the report by the Federation Council's temporary commission to protect state sovereignty and prevent foreign interference into Russia's internal affairs.
"I am sure that the friendship and cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan makes much more sense than any attempts of some external forces to break up our cooperation. It is very important to achieve peace, harmony and mutual understanding in the region, including in resolving very difficult issues existing in the Caucasus," Sergei Zheleznyak stressed.
In this regard, he drew attention to the significance of the recent meeting of the presidents of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, which took place in Tehran. "This important meeting was devoted not only to the issues of regional security, but also to the implementation of the largest economic projects and the logistics potential of the Caspian region. The point was to finish the missing part of the railway, which would very help to increase the transit of goods that can go from Southeast Asia to Europe through our countries," the deputy secretary of the General Council of United Russia said.
"I am confident that this project will be one of the priorities in the consideration of our governments. And it is very important to realize the peaceful social and economic potential of the Caspian. I am convinced that the leaders of our countries have a mutual understanding on this," Sergei Zheleznyak noted, adding that the tripartite cooperation of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran will be beneficial for all participants.
