Tel Aviv opposes Syria cease-fire

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday Israel opposes the cease-fire in Syria brokered by the United States and Russia because it empowers Iran.

Netanyahu made the comments to reporters after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.

Israeli PM discussed his displeasure with the cease-fire in southern Syria with Macron and made it known that Israel was opposed to the plan.

A senior Israeli official said that Israel believes Iran intends to expand its presence in Syria by sending advisers and military forces there. The Israeli official said Tehran wants to establish a base for Iranian aircraft and a naval base for Iran in Syria.

"This already changes the picture in the region from what it has been up to now," Haaretz cited the senior official as saying.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin brokered the cease-fire in Syria earlier this month during a meeting on the sidelines of the G-20 in Hamburg.
