Iraqi vice president Tariq al-Hashemi to be executed twice
1 November 2012 - 7:38pm
An Iraqi court on Thursday convicted the country's fugitive Sunni vice president on charges of instigating bodyguards to assassinate a senior government official and sentenced him to death.
The verdict was the second death sentence for Tariq al-Hashemi in less than two months, and is likely to stoke further resentment among Iraq's minority Sunni Muslims against the Shiite-led government, Fox News reports.
The criminal court in Baghdad also sentenced al-Hashemi's son-in-law, Ahmed Qahtan, to death on the same charges, said Supreme Judicial Council spokesman Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar. He said the two men were convicted of encouraging bodyguards to kill an official by sticking a bomb to his car.
