Russia's Alena Kaufman wins gold at Sochi Paralympics

Russia's Alena Kaufman won the country's second gold medal of the Sochi Paralympics on Saturday with victory in the women’s standing 6km biathlon event, RIA Novosti reports.

Kaufman, 26, led home a Russian one-two, winning by 30 seconds from compatriot Anna Milenina, who would have been in contention for gold had she not been forced to ski two penalty loops for missed shots.

"I believed until the end," Kaufman said, adding that her victory was made more special by the fact it came on International Women's Day, a major holiday in Russia.
