Governor of the Astrakhan region Igor Babushkin paid tribute to the memory of soldiers of the Azerbaijani rifle divisions
On August 30, on the day of the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Rostov region from the Nazi invaders, as part of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the opening of the military-historical museum complex "Sambek Heights" took place, in which the governor of the Astrakhan region Igor Babushkin took part.
Sharing his impressions of participation in this solemn event, Igor Babushkin recalled the heroic contribution of the Azerbaijani people to the liberation of the Rostov region. "Thousands of Soviet soldiers fought in the battles on the Mius Front. Soldiers of the 130th and 416th Azerbaijani rifle divisions showed special heroism in the heroic breakthrough. The people of Azerbaijan, at the cost of their fathers and sons' lives, defended the country from the Nazi invaders. Many of them remained here. on the Sambek heights. We will always be indebted to our neighbors and brothers, "said the governor of the Astrakhan region.
The 416th division was formed in 1942 in the Azerbaijan SSR in the city of Ujar. It consisted of more than 11 thousand Azerbaijanis. The 416th division got into the military chronicle of the Great Patriotic War for the liberation of Taganrog (Rostov region), receiving the honorary name "Taganrog".
The dominant feature of the new museum complex "Sambek Heights" is the Memorial of Glory, erected in 1980 at the initiative of Heydar Aliyev, who was at that time the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Azerbaijan SSR, in honor of the 35th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and in memory of the soldiers of the 416th and the 130th Infantry Divisions. In 2012, by the decision of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, the memorial was restored at the expense of the budgetary funds of Azerbaijan.
The new museum complex with a total area of 14 hectares, in addition to the Memorial of Glory, includes a museum and an information and exhibition center, a chapel, new monuments, an interactive platform for military equipment, and a memorial burial of the remains of soldiers discovered by search engines. There is a unique garden nearby, where specially selected trees and shrubs bloom throughout May.
