The government of Azerbaijan continues bringing in international experience and knowledge for strengthening national efforts aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic as a group of medical experts from Italy arrived in the country this week, Caspian News writes in the article Italian Specialists Join Azerbaijani Experts On Covid-19 Frontline. The mission of Italian medical experts from the country’s Civil Protection Department traveled to the Caspian country on Monday via special flight operated by the Finance Guard of Rome.

“The team includes six professionals, including doctors and nurses from Piedmont, Tuscany, Valle d’Aosta and the National Institute for Infectious Diseases “Lazzaro Spallanzani” in Rome, a world-class center in the study of infectious diseases that since June started a high profile collaboration program with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” reads a statement issued by the embassy of Italy in Baku.

The Italian medical experts will remain in Azerbaijan for about two weeks, available to local authorities in order to carry out consultancy, assistance, and training activities in the fight against and prevention of Covid-19, alongside their Azerbaijani counterparts. “During the visit, our existing protocols on treatment and prevention of the disease will be discussed. We are interested in their views on the future prognosis of the pandemic, the forecasts of the World Health Organization. In autumn, the disease is likely to go along with other respiratory diseases. In this regard, we have some training and protocols,” said Ramin Bayramli, who heads the Management Union of Medical Territorial Units in Azerbaijan.

The Italian medical contingent is not the first foreign professional group to visit Azerbaijan for helping contain the coronavirus outbreak. A group of infectious disease specialists, resuscitators, and pulmonologists from Russia and Turkey arrived in Azerbaijan on July 8 to work with local specialists for the treatment and prophylaxis to prevent the spread of the disease.

The next foreign medical specialist mission traveled to the Caspian country from Cuba as the country’s air carrier Azerbaijan Airlines brought a staff of 115 medical experts from Cuba’s world-renowned Henry Reeve Brigade to Baku on July 13. They are expected to intensively work with the local medical personnel on Covid-19 frontline over three months.

The Henry Reeve Brigade is known well for its contributions during health crises, wars, and natural disasters in various countries, including the Ebola pandemic and the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan. Currently, thousands of specialists from the organization work in 25 countries around the world to help local authorities contain the spread of coronavirus.

Azerbaijan has confirmed 32,910 coronavirus cases as of August 4. The fatalities reached 473, while the total number of recoveries is amounted to 28,348. Azerbaijan has recorded the least number of Covid-19 infections and deaths in the Caspian region, where Russia, Iran, and Kazakhstan are also located. Currently, Covid-19 patients in Azerbaijan are treated at 46 hospitals. The government of the country has put into operation nine modular hospitals for treating coronavirus patients.
