Azerbaijan to help Russia with Non-Aligned Movement
Russia is in close contact with Azerbaijan on the issue of obtaining observer status in the Non-Aligned Movement, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
"As for the possibility of Russia obtaining observer status in the Non-Aligned Movement, this issue is being worked out in close contact with Azerbaijan as the current chairman of the movement," the diplomat said.
She stressed that in recent years Russia and the countries of the Non-Aligned Movement have established very close interaction. "This is facilitated by the closeness and coincidence of Russia’s approaches and the Movement’s member states regarding most issues on the international agenda," Zakharova said.
"Against this background, raising the status of Russia (in the organization) seems to be a logical initiative," the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
On October 22, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Vershinin announced that Russia plans to obtain observer status in the Non-Aligned Movement.
