Explosive legacy of Karabakh war
The death of Azerbaijani Army officer, Colonel Babek Samidlli and the wounding of five more people, including the Russian peacekeeper, as a result of mine blast in Azerbaijan's Terter region raised the issue of multilateral cooperation in demining the liberated Azerbaijani territories. According to ANAMA estimates, the complete clearance of the de-occupied lands of Azerbaijan will take at least 10 years.
The explosion occurred during an operation to search for the bodies of those killed in the battles near Sugovushan carried out by representatives of Azerbaijan, Armenia, the Russian peacekeeping mission and the International Committee of the Red Cross. It was a mine laid by the Armenian occupation forces in the expectation that any of the Azerbaijani officers would step on it while advancing to the southwest, deep into the occupied lands. The war is over, Armenia has surrendered, but the death traps set up by the invaders still remain in place.
