Georgia uses army in response emergency situation in Mestia
Georgia's parliament has held an extraordinary session to approve sending the military equipment to the disaster zone in Chuberi after landslide caused flooding resulting in damage of motorways, bridges and houses.
After parliament’s approval, the Ministry of Defence has send a 50-meter panel bridge and 18 military engineering machines to Chuberi on the basis of the request.
Georgia's President, as the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the country, Giorgi Margvelashvili has issued a decree allowing the emergency response group to use the Georgian military forces to deal with the flooding and landslide disaster results in Mestia municipality.
A landslide caused the river Nenskra to flood beginning from July 5 which resulted in dozens of damaged houses, as well as bridges and motorways across the Chuberi community involving several villages.
The Eastern Command of the Land Forces and the Logistic Support Command of the General Staff will be involved in the disaster response process, according to the presidential decree.
Following the decree the emergency response group has appealed to the Ministry of Defense for additional enginerial machinery to restore six bridges damaged by the disaster, Agenda.ge reported.
Due to the absence of bridges the two sides of the river are cut off and workers are hindered from delivering necessary equipment to respond to the emergency situation at especially damaged places.
