Georgia welcomes visa-free regime with EU

Today the head of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, issued a statement which the whole of Georgia had been waiting for.

"I want to declare to you that this morning the Commission adopted a positive decision on the visa liberalization plans for Kosovo, Georgia and Ukraine," RIA Novosti quotes him as saying.

Juncker added that the [Euro] Commission can offer the Council to take a prompt decision on the liberalization of visas for these three mentioned countries already this morning.’’

Thus, the issue of granting Georgia a visa regime has finally been resolved. Now it is only an issue settling the formalities, after which residents of the republic will be able to travel to Europe without visas.

The first people in the country have already welcomed this decision.

"I welcome the report of the European Commission in connection with the implementation of the Action Plan to liberalize the visa regime, which fully reflects the progress made by Georgia in the past three years. The government and the Georgian authorities with great efforts and in the shortest period of time were fully able to satisfy all the requirements stipulated by the Action Plan," Sputnik quotes the Georgian president Giorgi Margvelashvili.

"From today forward a very important process that should lead to the adoption of a political solution to the European Union, which will officially open the borders of the EU to Georgian citizens, has started for us ... Our choice is the European choice, Europe is our well-being and progress, more Europe in Georgia and more Georgia in Europe,‘’ he added.

"Today is a historic day for our country, for every citizen. On the way to European integration, Georgia has made a move that will largely determine our future in the united family of the European states ... In spite of the many internal and external conflicts, a result has been achieved through the united efforts of the people and the authorities," Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili echoed the President.

According to him, the Commission clearly stated that the Georgian authorities have successfully implemented the commitments of the European Union and carried out all the reforms required for visa liberalization.

"This is the path to the unity of Georgia. We will make our country attractive to our Abkhaz and Ossetian brothers only by constructing a modern European country. I believe that the day will come when they will fully enjoy this blessing which European integration brings. This success is the beginning of a new path,‘’ the Prime Minister of Georgia summed up.
