Ilyas Umakhanov tells Vestnik Kavkaza that the normalization of relations between Turkey and Russia will take time
Today our program ‘Tribune’ once again visited the deputy chairman of the Federation Council, the representative of the executive body of the Republic of Dagestan, Ilyas Umahanov. Among the many topics that were discussed, special attention was given to the improvement of relations between Russia and Turkey, as well as the participation of Azerbaijan in this process.
According to Ilyas Umahanov, a full restoration of relations between Moscow and Ankara will take time. ‘’You can quickly destroy the relationship, but much more time and efforts are necessary to restore them. This includes the issue of trust in contacts, which are carried out primarily between the top officials of the states. It should be borne in mind that we will probably not see a rapid effect," he warned, pointing out that positive movement in the Russian-Turkish cooperation has already begun.
"Several reports, which are now coming from Turkey, show that the interest of Russian tourists coming to vacation in Turkey is relatively high, it is still in demand, for Ankara it will be a very important social signal that the relations between the two countries are gradually recovering in the format and to the extent they used to be before the criminal incident with the Russian aircraft and the Russian pilots," he said.
At the same time, Ilyas Umakhanov said, time for the restoration of relations will be necessary not only for the Russian, but also for the Turkish side. "Now we see formal signs of warming, according to the conditions put forward by the Russian side in the political-legal sphere and at the level of the heads of the two countries. But it is necessary to do a lot in Turkey itself: to restore the hotels, many of which were closed, the cooperation infrastructure between the commercial entities, which was surely broken. It's the middle of the year, the plans of the firms and companies have already been laid out – they will need time and effort to restore the contacts with Russia to their previous level,’’ the deputy chairman of the Federation Council said.
The senator agreed that the efforts of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev as a mediator in the conflict between Moscow and Ankara have contributed to the current political thaw between the states. ‘’The covert etiquette of diplomacy lies in the fact that we certainly cannot say anything – but given the activity of Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev and a number of the leaders of the Central Asian republics to normalize these relations, it can be assumed that these efforts will affect the final decision of the Turkish side," he said.
Every country has suffered from what happened – Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and other countries – and in this sense the normalization of relations meets the interests of all the states, not only Russia and Turkey, but also of our closest neighbors and partners,‘’ Ilyas Umakhanov pointed out.
