Kyrgyzstan presidential election runner-up Omurbek Babanov probed for incitement to ethnic hatred

The Prosecutor General's Office opened a criminal case against Omurbek Babanov and other persons on suspicion of calling mass for violent change of the constitutional order and inciting national, racial or religious hatred, the Prosecutor General's Office said in a statement on Saturday, AKI Press reports.

Babanov is probed for his September 28 public speech he delivered during his election campaigning in Amir Timur (On-Adyr) micro district of Osh city, where mainly ethnic Uzbek people live. He told them about alleged "infringement of the rights of people of the ethnic Uzbek people, national inequality in the country and pressure on ethnic Uzbeks from the state bodies with the aim of obtaining the locals' votes," the statement said.
