Maria Zakharova to Vestnik Kavkaza: we forced to respond to US sanctions
Russia will certainly react to the expansion of US sanctions, work on countermeasures is underway, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said, answering a question from Vestnik Kavkaza.
At the same time, she specified that a cancelled meeting of the Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Shannon is not part of this response. "I cannot say that the cancellation of the consultations was a response to the sanctions, these are different things," Maria Zakharova explained.
"Sanctions are traditionally responded by mirror methods. So as Mr. Ryabkov said, this issue is still being looked into. Unfortunately, we are forced to respond to this," the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed..
At the briefing, Maria Zakharova pointed out that Russia has not stopped consultations with the State Department at the level of deputy heads of departments. "As for whether this format is permanently canceled or is a refusal from the format in general - the answer is no. For today the atmosphere created by our American partners is not conducive to hold such a round of negotiations," the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza cited her as saying.
She also added that the expanded sanctions "are out of logic." "Either this is again a continuation of the policy aimed at isolating Russia, or it is inertia that is not under the control of the US foreign policy department. It is difficult to understand," Maria Zakharova concluded.
