Mustafa Tuna becomes new Ankara mayor

Mustafa Tuna has been elected as the new mayor of Ankara, as the former mayor Melih Gökçek recently resigned.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) announced on Nov. 5 that its candidate for the Ankara mayoralty would be Mustafa Tuna.

The announcement came after the AKP reportedly conducted a survey in the party headquarters on Nov. 4, in which Tuna came out on top, followed by current Altındağ District Mayor Veysel Tiryaki and Kahramankazan District Mayor Lokman Ertürk, the Hurriyet Daily reported.

Tuna was elected mayor of Sincan in the local elections of 2009 and 2014. He had been a deputy from the AKP between 2002 and 2007, serving as Turkey’s member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
