Robert Cekuta: Azerbaijan is living example of religious tolerance
Azerbaijan, being a secular state, is a living example of religious tolerance for other countries, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Robert Cekuta, said in a statement marking the 14th anniversary of the September 11th 2001 terror attacks.
The diplomat also said that looking at the religious tolerance existing in Azerbaijan, we can "hope that one day sectarian violence will be a thing of the past." However, achieving that future will require commitment from all sides, he added.
Cekuta stressed that the United States supports Azerbaijan’s self-stated goals of economic diversification, combating corruption, and enhancing government accountability. "We believe that Azerbaijan will be able to secure a prosperous and stable future doing this," Interfax-Azerbaijan cited him as saying.
The diplomat reminded that Azerbaijan was among the first countries to express support for the United States following the attacks of September 11th 2001.
In addition, Robert Cekuta noted Azerbaijan's role in the joint fight with the US and NATO against extremism in Afghanistan.
