Tragedy in Beslan: eleven years later
Russia is holding commemorative events dedicated to the tragedy in Beslan: on September 1st 2004 at 09.15 a group of terrorists captured 1100 hostages in school Nunber 1 in Beslan.
The gunmen barricaded and mined the building with explosive devices. 20 people were killed. The first victim was Ruslan Betrozov, a father of two children.
As a result of negotiations on September 2nd, the gunmen agreed to meet with former Ingush President Ruslan Aushev. After the talks, 24 hostages were released. Meanwhile, the negotiations continued, the government forces asked the attackers to allow food and water to be passed to the captives, but it produced no positive results.
On September 3rd an explosion occurred, gunfire was opened from both sides. Children started jumping from the windows. As a result of the storming of the building, all the terrorists were killed. Only Nurpasha Kulaev, who two years later was sentenced to death, survived.
334 people became victims of the tragedy, 186 of whom were children. 10 members of the special center of the FSB, 2 members of the Emergencies Ministry and 17 teachers were killed.
