US comments on early presidential election in Azerbaijan
The United States hopes that the Azerbaijani government will hold free and fair presidential election, in line with the Constitution and international commitments, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the US State Department's Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Bridget Brink said in Baku.
"The US supports democratic processes and an environment where people can freely assemble and express their opinions and where there are free media. We believe that respect for human rights, the rule of law, the creation of conditions for business development are of great importance for Azerbaijan," the State Department official stressed.
She added that as US President Donald Trump said, the US is establishing the closest ties with countries that share its values, Interfax-Azerbaijan reported.
Brink also thanked Azerbaijan for the support for NATO mission in Afghanistan.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an order February 5 announcing early presidential election for April 11.
