Zakir Hasanov and Joseph Dunford hold talks in Baku
Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford met with Azerbaijan’s Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov in Baku today, the press service of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said.
Dunford stressed that the US highly appreciates Azerbaijan's participation in the fight against terrorism and high professionalism of Azerbaijani peacekeepers in Afghanistan.
Dunford also said that he was well aware of the successful reforms implemented in the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.
Colonel General Hasanov, in turn, said that military ties between the two countries are developing successfully. He spoke about military cooperation between Azerbaijan and the US, including activities of Azerbaijan’s Armed Forces within NATO programs. Hasanov also noted Azerbaijan’s contribution in the Resolute Support non-combat mission in Afghanistan.
Touching upon the military and political situation in the region, Hasanov noted the importance of resolving the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within international law, Trend reports.
During the meeting, the sides discussed security in the Caspian Sea, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, expansion of the bilateral military ties, as well as military education.
In addition, Dunford expressed deep gratitude to the Azerbaijani government for assistance in holding the bilateral meeting with Russia’s Gen. Valeriy Gerasimov in Baku.
