Azerbaijan marks National Salvation Day
The post-Soviet nation of Azerbaijan marks National Salvation Day on Saturday, June 15th. On this day in 1993 Heydar Aliyev was elected as the chairman of the Azerbaijani Republic's Supreme Council. The holiday was officially introduced in 1998.
Azerbaijan became independent in October 1991, but the first years of independence were marred by tensions and military conflict with Armenia. Heydar Aliyev managed to stabilized the situation in the country.
On this day many festivities are held in Azerbaijani cities.
