Russian foreign minister announces attitude towards Iranian nuclear program
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said today that the stage-by-stage principle for settlement of the Iranian nuclear program proposed by the six mediators should have a special role in the peace process. It would allow sanctions against Iran to be lifted and cooperation with the international society to deepen, KUNA reports.
Successful settlement of the problem needs political will and flexibility, the minister goes on. All sides need to abstain from unreasoned actions capable of ruining all efforts. Further sanctions against Iran should be stopped, Lavrov believes.
Russia recognizes the right of Iran for development of the peaceful nuclear program and the right for enrichment of uranium under IAEA monitoring.
Commenting on the presidential polls in Iran, Lavrov expressed hope that the new leader would stick to existing relations with the high authorities of the Islamic Republic.
The Russian foreign minister believes that countries of the Gulf do not need to take part in talks between Iran and the six mediators.
