ITAR-TASS to be renamed to TASS
The session of the organizing committee to mark the 110th anniversary of ITAR-TASS approved renaming of the agency to TASS, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.
The St. Petersburg Telegraph Agency, the predecessor of TASS, was opened in September 1904. It was the first official Russian information agency to cover political, financial, economic, commercial and other affairs in the Russian Empire.
The Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS) formed in 1925 had an exclusive right to collect information beyond the USSR and spread it throughout the world. The Information Telegraph Agency of Russia (ITAR-TASS) was formed after the 1991 events, where “TASS” was preserved.
