Turkmenistan does not want to join Eurasian Union

 

Turkmen Ambassador to Russia Berdumurat Recepov said yesterday that Turkmenistan considered Russia a strategic partner but was not planning to join the Eurasian Economic Union (Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus). In his words, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized the strategic status of partnership with Russia, noting the $5-billion trade turnover between the two countries, RIA Novosti reports.Turkmenistan and Russia support each other in the UN, OSCE, CIS and other international organizations. The sides have a common approach to the Caspian problem.Recepov reminded that Turkmenistan preferred to remain neutral and will focus on bilateral relations. It is an associated member of the CIS. Thus, it does not take part in all CIS projects.
