Heiko Langner: Baku will not allow expansion of occupation

The incident with the Armenian military helicopter could seriously aggravate the situation on the contact line between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops, Berlin-based political scientist Heiko Langner said in an interview to VK, commenting on the destruction of the Armenian helicopter by the Azerbaijani Air Forces.

"In practice, the current situation on the frontline can hardly be called a "ceasefire". Rather, it is an ongoing armed conflict, characterized by a low level of intensity. The frequency and intensity of armed conflicts have increased significantly and could lead to an escalation of the conflict," he said.

"From the point of view of international law, Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied areas adjacent to it are still a part of Azerbaijan... Azerbaijan has made it clear that it will not allow expansion of Armenia's military occupation in its airspace," Langer stressed.

He called for an effective control mechanism to be developed to maintain the ceasefire in the region.
