Putin: Russia should be protected from terrorism

Russian President Vladimir Putin has attended an urgent session of the FSB board. In a speech, the president urged FSB authorities to prevent attempts at infiltration of ISIS militants into Russia. He noted that citizens of CIS countries were being trained in hotspots on the territory of Syria and other countries and may be used against Russia or neighbouring states.

Vladimir Yevseyev, the head of the Caucasus office of the Institute of CIS Countries, said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza that the threat was real for the North Caucasus and Volga republics. After returning from war in the ranks of ISIS, they may engage in radicalism. Yevseyev added that a lot more militants were recruited in Central Asia and the South Caucasus. The expert wants more attention to be paid to citizens of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan fighting in the ranks of ISIS. The same concerns Georgians from the Pankisi Gorge and Adjara. Yevseyev noted that people inclined to the Salafi movement should be given special attention.

Putin said in his speech that border guards should be more vigilant in preventing infiltration of criminals and letting refugees and humanitarian convoys pass, especially on the Ukrainian border.

The president praised the FSB, law enforcers and the National Anti-Terrorism Committee for progress. In his words, the number of terrorism-related crimes dropped 2.6 times in 2014, compared with 2013. The number of such crimes dropped 9-fold in the last 5 years, TASS reports.

Furthermore, Putin urged the FSB to secure celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Victory Day on May 9 and the summits of BRICS and SCO in Ufa in July.

In the president’s opinion, the intelligence agency should fight economic crimes causing ruble fluctuations, corruption, thefts of budget funds. He recommended that the FSB cooperate with the Audit Chamber, Russian Financial Monitoring and other structures.

According to Putin, campaigns will be organized against Russia during the elections in 2016 and 2018. He urged the FSB to prevent attempts at destabilization. The president expressed confidence that an appropriate response to anti-Russian acts would be given.
