Turkish president: conflicts in Syria and Iraq can be settled via mediation of Iran and Turkey

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in Tehran that Turkey and Iran should become mediators in the peace processes of Syria and Iraq to stop the bloodshed, RIA Novosti reports.

Erdogan reminded that over 100,000 people have died in Iraq and at least 300,000 in Syria. He noted that it was irrelevant whether the victims of the conflicts were Sunnies or Shiites.

The Turkish president admitted that Ankara and Tehran had different approaches to the conflict in Syria: Iran supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Turkey wanted his resignation as the person responsible for the armed conflict in the country. Iran and Turkey have common grounds in combating ISIS.
