2015 European Games: high competition and desire to win

Participants of the Russian boxing team Anastasia Belyakova, Yaroslava Yakushina and Sayan Sagataeva, who will represent Russia at the 2015 European Games in Baku, visited Vestnik Kavkaza yesterday. The athletes said that the competition at the Games will be very high, but they are determined to win and to get the championship titles.

According to them, preparations for the Games will begin in the near future, as the last few weeks were devoted to resting after the Russian Women's Boxing Championship, which was held on March 1-7.

"We already are quietly preparing ourselves, getting ourselves in shape," Anastasia Belyakova said. The athletes stressed that they are going for medals in Baku and are not allowing any thoughts that they will be able to lose to anyone in the ring. "I think we should be considered as the main rivals," Yaroslava Yakushina added.

The participants of the team admitted that it will be the first time they will go to Azerbaijan, and they are ready to use their spare time to relax from the competition in Baku. "I would like to swim in the Caspian Sea and walk through the ancient streets of the Azerbaijani capital. I've heard that the movie Diamond Arm was shot in Baku, so I want to visit the streets of the old city and see the new Baku. The new modern buildings, it seems to me, are more beautiful when you're near," Sayan Sagataeva said.

Also, they are going to cheer other Russian athletes at the 2015 European Games. "We like male boxing better. We'll support them," Yaroslava Yakushina said. Sayan Sagataeva, in her turn, plans to visit the freestyle wrestling competitions.

The Russian athletes positively assessed the level of national teams of the South Caucasus. "Azerbaijan has a good team, although each weight has slips, but everyone works to improve themselves. And the weights which will be in Azerbaijan are considered Olympic, so it is unlikely that there will be feeble girls," they emphasized, adding that they await strong competition from such countries as the USA, Ireland, England and France.

"We had to pass through a very rigorous selection process to get to these games, because each weight category includes only eight people. A weak squad simply cannot get through to these Games, and the competition will be quite high," Sayan Sagataeva explained. The 2015 European Games will be held in Baku on 12-28 June 2015. Its program includes competitions in 20 sports. More than 6 thousand athletes from 49 countries will participate in the Games, 239 sets of medals will be played. The Baku 2015 European Games Organizing Committee is headed by the First Lady of Azerbaijan, the President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, a member of the executive committee of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO, Mehriban Aliyeva. This fact indicates the importance of this event to the Republic of Azerbaijan: the successful experience of holding Eurovision 2012 in Baku under the leadership of Mehriban Aliyeva gives confidence that the European Games will be the standard of preparing and holding sports at this level.
