German parliament cannot agree on state of human rights respect in Azerbaijan
Socialist Christof Stresser’s report on human rights in Azerbaijan failed at the PACE on January 23. Reports of the greens and socialists failed as well. Catherine Werner of the communists said that Stresser’s report had been made without visiting Azerbaijan and had been based on blogs and NGO reports.
She says that the reports give poor image of Azerbaijani public and political realities. An impartial image needs meetings with officials of NGOs, trade unions, opposition, government.
Werner reminded that Azerbaijan was part of the Non-Aligned Movement since 2011 and had a balanced policy. She praises Azerbaijan for democratic achievements and noted that it spend only 20 years for democratic developments after the collapse of the USSR.
According to the WB, the number of people earning less than $1.25 dropped to 4% in 2008. The GINI coefficient drops.
Werner added that Azerbaijan was a secular state with a Muslim population. It allows construction of churches and synagogues.
